James D. Gossett Elementary currently offers a free full-day Pre-Kindergarten program for any student who has turned 4 years old on or before September 1 of the current school year. Classes are taught by a highly-effective, certified teacher, and a certified paraprofessional is available to assist the classroom teacher.

Curriculum The current PreK curriculum, Frog Street Press, is adopted and aligned with the Texas PreK guidelines in the following domains: social and emotional development; language and communication; emergent literacy reading; emergent literacy writing, mathematics; science; social studies; fine arts; physical development, and technology. To augment the use of the District curriculum, the PreK teacher will use the CIRCLE Activity Collection for supplemental classroom activities and lessons. All classroom activities are aligned to the child outcomes in the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines.
Assessment  The PreK teacher will use CIRCLE Progress Monitoring to measure the progress of students in meeting the recommended learning outcomes. The CIRCLE Progress Monitoring System is a user-friendly, technology-driven tool that enables teachers to assess a child's progress in a particular skill area almost instantly. The CIRCLE Progress Monitoring System was approved for the 2016-2017 Commissioner's List of Approved Progress Monitoring Instruments. It is a standardized, criterion-referenced measure that relates well to established standardized tests and is sensitive to growth in children's skills over time. CIRCLE Progress Monitoring generates reports that show children's progress in rapid vocabulary naming, rapid letter naming, phonological awareness, mathematics, social and emotional development, writing, and book and print knowledge.
